TRY Rugby: How Players Grow WIth the Game

A Safe, Age-Appropriate Pathway for Grades K–8

TRY Rugby introduces the game of rugby in a safe, age-appropriate way for students in grades K–8. Beginning in our 8U age division, players learn the fundamentals of the game through a non-contact format using flag belts. This approach allows kids to stay active, build confidence, and have fun with their friends while learning core skills in a supportive environment.

As players grow, the game grows with them. Rules, field size, and contact elements are introduced gradually and intentionally, helping athletes develop skills, confidence, and a love for the game—without rushing the process.

Is Rugby Safe?

When taught and played correctly, rugby is a safe sport. TRY Rugby uses age-appropriate rules, progressive skill development, and trained coaches to introduce contact gradually and responsibly. Younger age groups start with non-contact rugby, and contact elements are only added as players grow and demonstrate readiness.

Player safety is supported through:

  • Strict rules and law variations designed for each age group
  • Coach education focused on proper technique and injury prevention
  • Medical coverage and safety protocols at matches
  • An emphasis on respect, sportsmanship, and controlled play

Like all youth sports, injuries can happen, but rugby’s structured progression and focus on technique help reduce risk while building confident, well-prepared athletes.

Our Development Philosophy

At every age level, TRY Rugby prioritizes safety, enjoyment, and development. Players progress only when ready, and rules are designed to match physical and emotional growth—creating confident athletes and lifelong rugby players.

Player Welfare Comes First

At every age grade, rules and expectations are designed to match a player’s physical, emotional, and skill development. Progression is intentional and guided first and foremost by player safety, readiness, and long-term development.

In limited and exceptional cases, a player who demonstrates advanced skills and readiness beyond their assigned age group may be considered to “play up” through a formal waiver process. All requests require coach support, parent/guardian acknowledgment, and Rugby Colorado review. Approval is not automatic and may be granted, denied, or revoked in the interest of player welfare.
