HIGH SCHOOL RUGBY
About High School Rugby
Players from 14-19
Fall: Early September to November
Spring: Early March to May
Our high school program is the premier competition for student-athletes in grades 9 through 12. We are dedicated to providing a safe, inclusive, and competitive environment where players develop their skills, forge lifelong friendships, and learn the core values of rugby: discipline, integrity, passion, solidarity, and respect.
Age Divisions and Competition Levels
To ensure fair competition and appropriate development for all athletes, our high school program is organized into two primary age divisions for both boys and girls:
18U: This division is typically for older and more experienced players, often juniors and seniors. It represents the highest level of high school competition in the state.
16U: This division is focused on younger and developing players, primarily freshmen and sophomores, providing a crucial pathway to gain experience.
This structure allows clubs to field multiple teams, ensuring that players of all ages and skill levels get significant and meaningful playing time.
Seasonal Structure
Our high school calendar is designed to maximize development and competition, with a specific format each season for both boys' and girls' 18U and 16U teams.
Fall Season (7s Rugby)
The school year kicks off with the fast-paced, Olympic-style version of the game.
Seven-a-side rugby
(7s) is an exciting, wide-open game that emphasizes speed, agility, and fitness. The fall season is built around a series of weekend tournaments, offering a dynamic and engaging atmosphere for all age divisions.
Spring Season (15s Rugby)
The spring season is dedicated to the traditional format of the sport.
Fifteen-a-side rugby
(15s)
is a more tactical and structured game, emphasizing teamwork and strategy. This is the primary competitive season, with leagues for each age group culminating in the highly anticipated
State Championships.
- Player Safety: Our number one priority. We are aligned with USA Rugby safety standards, provide SafeSport training for all coaches, and emphasize teaching safe contact techniques.
- Skill Development: We are committed to developing skilled rugby players. Our certified coaches focus on building core skills and tactical knowledge appropriate for each age division.
- Pathway to a Higher Level: For athletes with ambitions to play at the next level, Rugby Colorado provides a clear pathway. Our High-Performance program identifies top talent from across the state to compete in regional and national tournaments, offering exposure to college and USA Rugby scouts.
